Marc Wilkins

Originally born in Bern, Marc Wilkins today lives in Berlin and New York. A European who winks at America, he calls his approach to filming ‘anti-intellectual’ and his attitude to life ‘naïve, but with a purpose’. Marc’s universe is driven by desire and punctuated by irony. In his films, perversions are romantic and chaotic – even the more aggressive ones find their rightful place, providing the perfect backdrop for the young and angry icons he plays with. His dark images take us to an imaginary universe dreamt of in a lush summer’s night. The rowdy appeal of his characters is never vulgar; rather they are sinfully humorous or downright dramatic. Thanks to his rigorous commitment to the camera and an elegant use of postproduction and sound, he amuses himself and the viewer alike with the poetic touch of provocative surrealism that is his signature. In 2003 he was chosen as one of the world’s top young directors at the “New Directors Showcase” in Cannes. He won his first Gold Lion that same year.
